About the Position:
The Department of Public Works Transportation Division is seeking an Engineer II/III to assist with professional level engineering and project management activities for implementation of Capital Improvement Projects.
In addition to the general Representative Duties for the Engineer Series, it is anticipated that the qualified Engineer II/III candidate will fulfill one or more of the following essential functions for the Transportation Division – Capital Project Unit:
• Procure, administer, and manage engineering contracts between the County and private engineering firms.
• Ensure that assigned transportation projects are completed within scope, cost, schedule, and budgeted resources, and that projects comply with departmental standards and Caltrans/FHWA funding criteria.
• Provide technical oversight and project coordination of consultants and County staff performing engineering, environmental, and right-of-way work related to the development of the County's transportation projects.
•Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of designs, plans, quantities, specifications and construction drawings for County transportation projects.
Engineer II & III are part of a career series for Engineer I, II, III and IV. Classes in this series perform a wide variety of professional field and office engineering work in the public works field; and do other related work as required.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge, experience, and/or interest in a variety of the following areas: the phases of federally funded projects; project management; preparing correspondence and reports; making effective presentations; accounting and finance; the impact of transportation facilities on the environment, the community and the economy; principles and techniques of personnel and consultant management; transportation design principles.

All Levels: Engineer I, II, III, IV: Either A: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field (Job-related professional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis); Or B: Possession of an Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) Certificate or Land Surveyor in Training (L.S.I.T.) Certificate and four years of paraprofessional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience.
Engineer II: One year of professional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience. (Possession of a Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, or two years of paraprofessional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience may be substituted for the required experience).
Engineer II: Within five (5) years of appointment must obtain Registration as a Civil Engineer or Land Surveyor in the State of California, which must be maintained throughout employment. The five year requirement may be extended up to an additional 12 months by the appointing authority.
Engineer III: Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer or Land Surveyor issued by the California State Board of Registration AND one year of professional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience.(Possession of a Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience.)
Engineer III: One year of specialized professional level civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience such as serving as a resident engineer on small construction projects, experience as an assistant engineer on major construction projects, or project leader on a design project.
A valid driver license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
