The Transportation Director is a member of the city’s executive team that advises the City Council in coordination with the City Manager’s office on citywide transportation projects, policies and strategies for continuing to create a livable Bellevue. The position reports directly to one of the Deputy City Managers in the City Manager’s Office.
The Transportation Director has oversight responsibility for the services and activities of the Department, which includes Transportation Planning, Traffic Management and Capital Program Services. The mission of the Transportation Department is to provide a safe and efficient transportation system that supports livable neighborhoods, multiple modes, and a vital economy in partnership with a diverse community. The position manages a biennial budget of $163 million and a professional and administrative staff of 145 employees.
The City of Bellevue is seeking a Transportation Director that places a high value on the operational principal of “managing for results”, with an emphasis on spending limited resources effectively and efficiently while providing value to stakeholders. The director also needs to be committed to advancing community values, through a data-driven approach for budget management and cost-recovery, where the costs of services, acquisitions, and capital improvements are fully understood, measurable, and defensible.

Consideration for the position requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or other related field and ten or more years of progressively responsible related experience in leadership, especially in the field of transportation or traffic engineering, as well as public administration. A Master of Science or Master of Public Administration and Washington State Professional Engineering License are preferred, but not required.
